What is the Private Journal?

The Private Journal is a distraction-free daily writing tool that stores your entries in your browser's localStorage. Unlike cloud-based diary apps that sync your personal reflections to external servers, this tool keeps all entries on your local device. There is no account, no login, and no data transmission.

Each entry is tied to a calendar date and includes a mood selector (Happy, Neutral, Sad, Productive). Your journal persists across sessions and can be exported as a JSON backup or downloaded as a plain-text .txt file for offline archiving.

How to Use the Private Journal

Writing and managing journal entries involves these steps:

  1. The editor automatically opens to today's date. Start typing in the text area to begin your entry.
  2. Click one of the mood emoji buttons (😊 😐 😔 🚀) to log your emotional state for the day.
  3. Your entry auto-saves to localStorage as you type. The "All changes saved automatically" message confirms each save.
  4. Use the left sidebar to navigate to past entries. Entries are sorted by date, newest first.
  5. Click "Download as TXT" to export a plain-text file of all your entries to your computer.
  6. Click "Backup as JSON" to export a structured JSON backup file that can be reimported or stored offline.
  7. Use the Delete button to permanently remove the currently open entry from localStorage.

Key Features

  • Date-Based Entry System: Automatically maps entries to calendar dates for chronological browsing.
  • Mood Tracker: Pairs each entry with one of four mood states to help identify emotional patterns over time.
  • Dual Export Formats: Exports as a human-readable .txt file or a structured .json backup for data portability.
  • Auto-Save Engine: Saves to localStorage on every keystroke so no data is lost if the tab is accidentally closed.

Common Use Cases

This journal is helpful for the following tasks:

  • Daily Reflection: Writing end-of-day reflections, gratitude entries, or morning pages without privacy risk.
  • Mental Wellness Tracking: Practicing CBT journaling, gratitude exercises, or mood logging recommended by therapists.
  • Career Retrospectives: Documenting professional wins, lessons, and growth moments as a private performance record.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my writing encrypted?
Entries are stored in your browser's sandboxed localStorage. While not encrypted behind a master password, they cannot be accessed by other websites. Use a device passcode for additional security.

Can I read my entries on my phone?
Since the journal is local-only, entries do not sync between devices. Use the "Backup as JSON" export to transfer your archive to another device.

What happens if I clear my browser cache?
Clearing site data for 99tool.in will erase your journal entries. Export a backup regularly using the "Backup as JSON" or "Download as TXT" buttons.

Can I have multiple entries per day?
The tool maps one entry per calendar day. If you need to add to an existing entry, simply open that date and continue writing in the same text area.

Privacy & Data Note

All journal entries, mood selections, and exported files are processed entirely inside your browser. Your personal reflections are stored only in your browser's localStorage and are never transmitted to any server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your entries are stored in your browser's local storage. This area is "sandboxed" by your operating system, meaning other websites cannot read it. While not "locked" behind a master password like our Password Vault, it is highly private to your browser profile on this machine. For extra security, we recommend using a device passcode.

Since this is a private app, entries don't sync between devices (to protect your privacy). If you write on your desktop, the entries stay on your desktop. However, you can use our Export Backup feature to move JSON logs between devices if you need to.

Clearing "Cookies and Site Data" for 99tool.in will remove your local storage, including your journal entries. We strongly recommend using the Export Backup button once a month to keep a personal CSV/JSON copy of your precious memories just in case.
