What is the Task Time Tracker?
The Task Time Tracker is a private time-logging tool that lets you record how long you spend on specific tasks throughout the day. Standard cloud-based time trackers store your work logs on external servers, where they can be analyzed or shared. This tool stores all session data exclusively in your browser's localStorage, with no server interaction.
Start a task by name, press Stop when finished, and the completed session is instantly added to your activity log with an exact duration. Your today's total and individual logs persist across page refreshes and are cleared at the start of each new day.
How to Use the Task Time Tracker
Logging a time session involves these steps:
- Enter the name of your task (e.g., "Writing Proposal" or "Code Review") in the Task Name input field.
- Click "Start Tracking" to begin the live stopwatch. The timer displays in real time on the interface.
- Work on your task, then click "Stop & Save" when you are done. The session is logged to the Recent Activity list.
- View the "Today's Total" counter to see your cumulative tracked time for the current day.
- Click "Clear All" to reset your activity log for the day.
Key Features
- Named Task Logging: Attaches a descriptive label to each time block so you know exactly which task each duration belongs to.
- Live Stopwatch Display: Shows hours, minutes, and seconds in real time while tracking is active.
- Daily Total Aggregation: Automatically sums all completed sessions into a running daily total.
- LocalStorage Persistence: Logs survive page refreshes and are automatically cleared each morning.
Common Use Cases
This tracker is helpful for the following tasks:
- Freelance Billing: Tracking billable hours per client project to generate accurate invoices without uploading work data to a third-party service.
- Personal Efficiency Audits: Identifying how much time you actually spend on deep work versus interruptions across a day.
- Research Sessions: Logging focused reading or data analysis intervals to assess study habits and total output.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the timer accurate to the second?
Yes. The tracker uses the system clock (Date.now()) to measure durations, so it is accurate regardless of tab focus or browser throttling.
Do my logs sync across devices?
No. All data is stored locally in your browser's localStorage on the current device only. Use the export feature to move logs between devices if needed.
What happens to my logs at the end of the day?
Logs are automatically cleared at the start of a new day (midnight) to keep your workspace clean. Export important logs before midnight if you need a permanent record.
Can I track multiple tasks simultaneously?
No. The tracker is designed for one active task at a time, encouraging focused single-tasking rather than multitasking.
